Let Go of What Others Think
When we experience low self-esteem, we canât fully embrace who we are and instead seek approval from external sources. As weâll come to see, this is a natural part of being human; we all do this in some capacity. However, it becomes a bigger issue when we live our lives pursuing acceptance from others. This restricts our ability to live truly from our authentic divine selves.
In Steps 1 and 2, we explored how past experiences, trauma, and social conditioning can hinder our ability to show up as our authentic selves. We fear that people will dislike us or wonât accept us as we are. For individuals who have long sought love and acceptance from others and been rejected in some way through bullying, family rejection, or abuse, it can be an immensely intimidating challenge. Our human design, through evolution, means we were born to survive in groups. In the era of hunter-gatherers, mutual reliance was crucial for survival. This historical context helps us grasp why acceptance has become integral to our ability to navigate the world effectively. Of course, now we donât need to worry so much about this in terms of our survival. We understand that our lives donât depend on the approval of every individual, yet this knowledge aids us in comprehending the subconscious forces at work.
I used to care so much about what others thought of me; however, when I developed better self-esteem, I started to let go of that. I realized that other people would always have a view or an opinion of me. It may be good, bad, or neutral, but I had no control over what others thought. It became increasingly important that what I thought of myself mattered more. Over the past couple of years, I had an encounter where a fellow therapist sent me a text message outlining their opinions of something Iâd posted on social media. In this post, I shared some insights into attachment styles. I didnât ask this fellow therapist for her opinion, but she took it upon herself to express what she thought was incorrect about the post. When I reread my post and her opinion, she had clearly misinterpreted something. So, I messaged her back and pointed this out to her, which she then accepted and could see where I was coming from. However, this experience really rattled my confidence. I didnât express anger or become rude to her, but I asserted myself because I disagreed with her viewpoint. The sad fact is that she unfollowed me on Instagram, which really hurt me. I found it triggering because it felt like rejection, just like my experiences of being bullied in my teens. It showed me that my wounded and rejected inner child remained vulnerable to activation. I contemplated unfollowing her, but decided to rise above this, as I felt it was a childish act anyway and that I would choose to respond with love rather than anger. I am sharing this experience
